The second research area focuses on developing platinum-derivatized triplex-forming oligonucleotides that are targeted to polypurine tracts that occur in the promoter and coding regions of the human androgen receptor gene, whose expression is necessary for survival of prostate cancer cells. These cross-linked duplexes are incorporated into longer linear DNA duplexes to study cross-link processing in cell extracts, and into reporter plasmids to study cross-link repair in mammalian cells. We have developed methods to synthesize short DNA duplexes that contain interstrand cross-links of defined structure and orientation. DNA interstrand cross-links are created by cancer chemotherapeutic agents such bischloroethylnitrosourea (BCNU) and by electrophiles such as malondialdehyde that produced in the intracellular environment by lipid peroxidation. The first area involves studying the mechanism(s) of DNA interstrand cross-link repair in mammalian cells. We are currently pursing research in three different areas. “It’s a great experience for everyone involved––the club, the athletes and coaches and the school. My laboratory uses nucleic acid chemistry and biochemistry to study biological problems. “In 2018, the club started streaming Central Penn Knights basketball, baseball and soccer games,” says Miller. Under Miller’s guidance, the media club produces a quarterly publication featuring the best recent articles from the group’s blog. He has hosted, produced and edited every episode of the Knightly News Podcast, which will reach its 100th episode this year. In addition, he is the faculty advisor to the Knightly News Media Club, the student news organization on campus. Since then, he was promoted to program coordinator of the Communication department, and has been awarded Faculty Member of the Quarter and Club Advisor of the Year. From that point forward, he began consulting small businesses in the Harrisburg region, working with dozens of businesses in helping them develop a plan for their content on social. Upon starting his master's program in 2005, he began working with a company called Solutions for Advertising and held a number of positions, including sales associate and social media editor.ĭuring that time, he immersed himself in social media, a new form of communication that would revolutionize the world. In 2003, he made the jump to the Butler County Radio network in Butler, Pa., where he worked in the newsroom, on-air and in promotions. Paul Miller started his professional journey at WRSK Radio in Slippery Rock, Pa., as an on-air personality and baseball color commentator. Program at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In addition, I have embarked on a new journey and have enrolled in the Communications Media and Instructional Technology Ph.D. I also have a desire to be a lifelong learner, as I am quite involved in programming provided by the Center for Teaching Excellence as well as working on a variety of certifications in my chosen field. In the end, I want to provide my students with a meaningful and rewarding education, so they can successfully transition from the classroom to the workforce in a seamless fashion. Exposing my students to professional events, such as career fairs and job shadowing, is an important component of the educational process. While students are familiar with today’s digital media, I also want them to understand the demands of the business, how to communicate professionally and how to develop those skills as fully as possible. Communication is a critical skill, no matter what career students decide to pursue. My goal as a professor is to prepare students academically and professionally to be successful in their chosen field.
